This year, I’ve set myself on an impossible mission – to clear my gaming backlog. We all have it, a far too long list of games in your library that you’ve barely touched, let alone completed.
Now, I don’t hold any unreasonable expectations of ever seeing to bottom of the barrel, but I’m going to make a solid attempt to work on at least the titles that you really shouldn’t miss. The one’s I feel the most guilty for missing.
While doing some research for this post, I found there’s even a service that helps you organize your Steam backlog, at https://www.steam-backlog.com
I’ll look into it further and maybe make a separate post about it.
So, going into 2018, I started to look at the games I had in my backlog that I really wanted to clear, and even when filtering out all the “fluff” I’ve gotten over the years through PlayStation Plus, Humble Bundle or other bundles/freebies, it’s still quite a daunting list. Just to name a few I have:
- Assassin’s Creed games (was stuck at AC3)
- Deus Ex
- A lot of Telltale games
- Life is Strange
- Final Fantasy XII. And IX. And XIII1-3. And of course XIV. And latest DLC in XV. And World of Final Fantasy.
- Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls
- Kingdom Hearts
- Still got DLCs left to do in Witcher 3.
- Rise of the Tomb Raider
- Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
- Mass Effect: Andromeda (probably shouldn’t but I can’t skip it either)
- Dragon Age: Inquisition
- Metal Gear Solid V
- Resident Evil 7 (need someone to hold my hand for that though, bloody hell it’s scary in VR)
- The Witness
- Tesla Effect
- Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor (but I’ve sort of given up this one since the 2nd was such a nasty thing)
Certainly forgot a lot and this is without going into the games I’ve not even bought yet, but want to play like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Persona 5, The Last Guardian, Yakuza-series and on and on. And then I get Deus Ex Mankind Divided last month on PS Plus. Give a brother a chance!
A backlog like this was maybe manageable when I had Sundays all to myself and the Mrs out shopping. But now Sundays are filled with Paw Patrol and what else my two off-spawn demand.
And if kids wasn’t enough, we have the “endless games”. Games like Civilization 6, League of Legends and Euro Truck Simulator 2. Games without a proper end, you can never check them off your list. And they just eat up hours like I eat Bilar, without any consideration for anyone/anything else.
And it’s not like I’ve never tried to complete the games above. Like Deus Ex. First I bought it on Steam and played it through Boot Camp on my Mac. And I played through probably half of the game, but then it got ported to Mac, and sold exclusively though the Mac App Store. I bought it but unfortunately, the saved games weren’t transferable. So I had to restart. By now I was maybe a bit fatigued by the game and strayed elsewhere. Now, there’s a Directors Cut back on Steam. And of course not compatible with saved games from the Mac App Store version. *sigh*
Anyhow, so this is my mission for 2018. Not eat healthier or spend less money on silly gadgets, but to
clear reduce my backlog of games. I’ve made good progress already, and I’ll keep you all updated in a series I’m calling Backlog Wars.
Stay tuned for updates from the front.
